Grand Theft Auto III (2001)

3.99 from 295 votes
The third release in the Grand Theft Auto Franchise stars silent criminal protagonist Claude who, after having been betrayed and left for dead, is out for revenge. It was the first GTA game in 3D, an evolution that proved to be pivotal and helped establish the franchise as one of gaming's most popular (and controversial).

My experience
A classic, the famous game that revolutionized the way we see this much loved franchise. It has a place in my heart, mainly because of its difficulty off the curve, which catches my attention. It's far from one of my favorites, but I have to acknowledge the industry milestone and all its influence. More diverse and creative missions. Better structured characters (even still far from great). Finally a true story. Minimally striking radio. Again a ghost protagonist, only this time a little more present (?). More fun side quests, nothing to complain about really. It may have aged badly in the long 21 years since launch, but it remains a legend in the gaming world.

Pros
+Multiple costumes
+Decent story and cast of characters
+Big size world for time of release spread across 3 sections which gets unlocked

Cons
-No in game map (you have to rely on the radar)
-Icons for shops, etc disappear and you have to manually find shops like for ammunition
-Limited cheats (Vehicles) unless you use mods
-Usage of mods requires some third party programs
-Mods need to be enabled to use controller properly and to have weather effects
-Frustrating missions - some of the hardest missions in the series
