A Fantastic Example of Worldbuilding
Horizon Zero Dawn is a gold standard example of a narrative explored through consistent worldbuilding, and intrigue guiding your way.
The story was excellently realized and draws you into Alloy's perspective. It makes you hunger for answers as much as the protagonist does.
The mechanics were fluid and well thought out. This is one of the few games out there that will consistently reward players for analyzing a situation, and then bringing the right tool for the job. Higher difficulties will make the threat of the enemies permanent, even at higher levels, forcing you to be considerate in strategy until late game.
The visuals were stunning. You will frequently be taking screenshots of sprawling landscapes, and noticing new details every time you fight a particular machine.
Unfortunately Horizon falls short in just enough places to be irksome. Inventory management quickly devolves into a chore that doesn't add a lot of value, forcing the player to frequently micromanage just to squeeze out some extra space. Especially in late game, when your bags are overflowing, this chore can become disruptive.
In addition, the facial animations appear to be automatically generated and will drain a lot of immersion out of many conversations. Which is a shame, given that the voice acting and dialogue are both well executed.
